Italy: A Capital Market Quietly Defying the Global Trend

One of the great privileges of taking The Global Investor Relations Revolution around the world has been seeing first-hand how differently capital markets are evolving.

It was therefore an enormous pleasure for its author, Oskar Yasar, to deliver the keynote address at the Italian Investor Relations Association conference as part of The Global Investor Relations Revolution tour.

Italy: A Capital Market Quietly Defying the Global Trend

One of the themes explored in the session was how capital markets around the world are evolving, and why that is fundamentally changing the role of Investor Relations.

Over the past two decades, many developed markets have experienced a sustained reduction in the number of listed companies. The US has recorded net declines in 18 of the last 20 years, while Europe has also seen more companies leave public markets than join them in many years.

Italy presents an interesting picture. Although it has not been immune to these pressures, its listed market has proved relatively resilient compared with a number of other major European markets.

The continuing evolution of Investor Relations in Italy

That resilience, together with continued efforts to strengthen Italy’s capital markets, means Investor Relations has an increasingly important role to play in attracting capital, building investor confidence and supporting long-term value creation.

It also reinforces one of the central themes of the book: Investor Relations is no longer simply about communicating performance. It has become a strategic function that sits at the heart of capital allocation, corporate reputation and boardroom decision-making.

Many thanks to Gianfranco Di Vaio, Paola Di Mario and Nicolò Delmonte for their warm welcome and for organising such a thoughtful event. It was a pleasure to spend time with so many accomplished professionals from across the Italian IR community.
